My Honest Experience of Living Alone: The Struggles and Joys

Hello my cuties, I hope you’re doing well. And if not, just hang in there — we’re all in the same boat, just at different times. Today, I will share with you my Living alone experience

With the rise of 10‑second reels and shorts, I don’t know how many of you still enjoy reading blogs or books. My attention span has definitely shrunk, but I’m still trying to keep up with my reading and writing game (though I fail miserably at times, as you may have noticed if you’ve read my earlier posts).

This time, I want to share my personal journey of living alone — something I’ve been doing for almost two years now.

The Beginning of My Solo Living Journey

I’m grateful to be able to afford a place of my own — a small 1RK apartment. I cook, clean, and manage everything myself. Being an introvert, I’ve always valued personal space. I’ve lived in hostels and PGs with friends and loved those experiences, but as I grew older, I wanted to live life on my own terms without disturbing others.

As a child, the idea of living alone thrilled me. Little me would have been jumping with happiness knowing this dream came true. But reality? It wasn’t easy. House hunting was exhausting, and even after finding a flat, setting it up from scratch was a challenge. From ordering utensils racks, almirahs, storage units, gas cylinders, study tables, and chairs — everything had to be arranged and assembled by me. Many times, I wasn’t even available to receive deliveries. I watched countless videos to figure out how to assemble furniture. It felt like solving endless puzzles, but somehow, I managed.

The Struggles of Living Alone

Living alone isn’t always glamorous. There are nights when I cry, moments when I feel overwhelmed, and times when I want to give up. Managing bills, fixing furniture, and even dealing with unexpected visitors like mice, cockroaches, and lizards — it all adds up.

Sometimes, coming back to an empty home feels heavy. The silence can be comforting, but it can also be lonely.

The Joys and Freedom of Solo Living

Despite the struggles, there are undeniable pros of living alone:

  • Cooking freedom: I can eat healthy and cook whatever I want.
  • Entertainment freedom: I can watch anything without earphones or worrying about disturbing others.
  • Peaceful sleep: No interruptions, no waiting for the washroom, no compromises.
  • Living on my terms: I don’t have to adjust for anyone else’s schedule or habits.

Am I making the most of living alone? Maybe, maybe not. But I’m learning more about myself every day — my likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. I’m seeing the world through my own eyes, and while it’s difficult at times, that’s what life is. It was never meant to be easy.

Final Thoughts

Living alone is a mix of freedom and responsibility. It teaches resilience, independence, and self‑discovery. Yes, there are tears, bills, and pests, but there’s also peace, growth, and joy. If you’re considering solo living, know that it’s not perfect — but it’s worth experiencing at least once.
